Job Description


The Housing Partnership Network (Network) is a member-driven collaborative of the nation’s 100 leading housing and community development nonprofits who combine social mission with business acumen to create affordable homes in thriving communities across the country.

TITLE:  VP for Communications and Marketing


The Vice President for Communications and Marketing is responsible for setting the strategic direction for the Housing Partnership Network’s communications efforts and for executing on that strategy.  The position reports to the Executive Vice President for Policy and External Affairs based in Washington, DC.



Lead the development and execution of a communications strategy that will increase the visibility of the Network and its members among key stakeholders in the financial, philanthropic, nonprofit, and public policy spheres, and establish the Network’s brand as a high-performing and innovative social enterprise.

Advance the quality and effectiveness of communications among the Network and the membership and to increase collaboration, share innovation, and advance policy change.

Work collaboratively with the organization’s leadership to support effective marketing of the Network’s member-owned businesses and to position these enterprises to increase revenues and access capital.

Develop collateral materials for the Network and Network enterprises for use with internal and external audiences, incorporating key messaging content for all target audiences.

Direct the Network’s web and online presence and design strategies for strengthening the organization’s use of the web and other social media to advance our communications, marketing, branding, and peer exchange strategies.

Serve as the Network’s primary point of contact with the media and other stakeholders seeking information about the Network, its members, and its activities.

Oversee printing, graphic design, print production, photography, and other media.

Coordinate with communications professionals working at Network member organizations to increase public awareness and support of the affordable housing and community development sector.

Write, edit, and translate the work of the Network into appropriate formats for the website, publications, press materials, and other communications vehicles aimed at internal and external audiences.

Maintain responsibility for organizational branding and brand awareness.


Demonstrated experience leading an organization-wide communication function that includes external affairs and press, internal communications, and marketing.

Strong commitment to advancing the practice of affordable housing and community development.

Strong collaboration skills and an ability to work closely and effectively with colleagues to improve the quality of communications within and outside the Network.

Proven track record in building relationships with the media, placing op-eds, and pitching stories to national media.

Ability to represent the Network at high profile events and meetings with major public, private, and nonprofit partners.

Experience in using social media tools to build effective communications networks and to advance collaboration among communities of practice.

Deep knowledge of affordable housing and community development policy and practice.

Experience providing strategic leadership to planning and execution time horizons often occurring over several years.

Strong project management skills.

Experience leading and facilitating peer exchange and collaboration among other communications professionals.

Exceptional writing, editing, and creative thinking abilities.

Master’s degree or equivalent years of education and experience.



A moderate amount of travel is required.
