Job Description

The Fair Lawn Jewish Center/Congregation B’nai Israel, an established and thriving 500-family Conservative egalitarian congregation, is seeking a Synagogue Administrator. This warm congregation offers religious services every day of the year, has a nursery school, religious school and day camp, Sisterhood, Men’s Progress Club, and other committees. The Synagogue Administrator will work closely with the rabbi, cantor, educators, front office and bookkeeper, head maintenance person and staff, as well as the exclusive caterer and volunteer leadership to ensure the successful day-to-day operation of the synagogue and maintenance of the facility. Knowledge of Jewish practice is required.

The Synagogue Administrator’s work focuses on:

Day-to-Day Operations

Supervise front office staff, bookkeeper, and head maintenance person.

This includes recruiting, hiring and firing; maintaining personnel files, delegating tasks, and overseeing payroll and work schedules.

Maintain the synagogue calendar and room usage, and coordinate events with volunteer leadership, including but not limited to high holiday and Shabbat services and an annual Ad Journal dinner dance.

Oversee synagogue publicity, publications and communications, including weekly and monthly synagogue newsletters, the website and social media sites, and mail and email. Knowledge of Constant Contact a plus.

Implement synagogue policies and procedures.

Coordinate security, emergency and disaster plans.

Maintain synagogue records, including minutes, bulletins, photos, etc.


Interface with current membership to implement synagogue programming, including life cycle events Work with the Membership and PR Committees to support their efforts Promote the synagogue to prospective members in the community Manage membership data using Chaverware system Fiscal Matters Oversee collection of dues, fees and accounts receivable Prepare and manage the house budget and all synagogue purchases in compliance with the budget Work with the Budget Committee to manage the synagogue budget Work with the Fundraising Committee to implement fundraising efforts, including acknowledging donations when appropriate Ensure compliance with all leases and contracts, including with our exclusive caterer Work with the Abatement Committee to make confidential special dues arrangements Handle sale of cemetery plots for synagogue members Function as a primary signatory and ensure all payments are approved and appropriate The Synagogue Administrator must be present at Executive Committee and Board meetings, new members’ events when necessary, and on some Sunday mornings. Flexible hours are possible to maintain a 40-hour work week.
