Full-Time Religious School Principal

Job Description

Temple Beth Ahm is a Conservative synagogue with 250 families. The religious school has 30-40 students and growing. Classes meet online on Wednesday evenings and in-person on Sunday mornings September through May. Salary ranges $50,000-60,000.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:


Administrator – Grades K through 7 (Primary I, Primary II, Kindergarten and Alef through and including Hey).

Provide recommendations for preparation of the annual school budget, and then administer the budget.

Create school calendar and schedule all school-related programs.

Recruit and hire teachers.
Supervise and evaluate teachers. Minimum of one written evaluation of teachers to be provided to the Board of Education no later than March 1.
Conduct orientation and regular faculty meetings
Promote appropriate staff development.
Counsel individual teachers to enhance their effectiveness.
Assign teachers according to their experience and expertise.
Notify the Chair or a member of the Board of Education Committee of Principal’s absences and designate a teacher to assume Principal’s responsibilities during times of absence.

Select and purchase texts and supplies.

Write updates for monthly The Shofar newsletter.

Send weekly emails to parents with pertinent school and scheduling information.

Be available for individual consultations with parents and students when appropriate, or upon request of parent(s).

Implement family-oriented education and integrate this with Temple programming where appropriate.

Attend Board of Education meetings regularly to advise, inform and participate in deliberation. Participate as a non-voting member of the Board of Education and attend Executive sessions when requested to do so.

Set-up registration procedures.
Make class lists and assignments.
Maintain school and student records.
Handle discipline and concerns.

Coordinate and follow-up on Shabbat attendance, including contacting parents.

Meet prospective members interested in school registration to discuss school curriculum and programming, if necessary.

Coordinate Rabbi participation in Religious School classes and programs during the year.

Work with families to set bar/bat mitzvah dates and coordinate tutoring.


Prepare and implement the curriculum with the approval of the Board of Education and in consultation with the Rabbi and faculty.

Evaluate and update the curriculum on an ongoing basis.

Initiate, implement and evaluate experiential programs, e.g., representation of school at Israel day.

Be present at all times when school is in session and attend all school related functions.

Be responsible for assuring teaching coverage of every classroom through maintenance of substitute list.


Support and participate in activities of regional and national Associations of Conservative Jewish Education.

Keep abreast of developments and trends in Jewish education through contact with literature of the field and taking courses.


Work with the preschool director to promote religious school and help transition graduates.


Serve as advisor and program coordinator for USY Chaverim, USY Gesher and USY. Responsibilities will include, but not be limited to, the following:

Plan, publicize and supervise at least one monthly chapter event for Temple Beth Ahm USY Chaverim, USY Gesher and USY Chapter.

Plan, develop, and implement programming that encourages “age-eligible” youth from Temple Beth Ahm and the local Jewish community to participate in USY Chaverim, USY Gesher and USY.

Reinforce Jewish principles and values to the youth including Tikun Olam.

Participate in Temple Beth Ahm Youth Commission Meeting as requested by Youth Commission Chair.

Ensure adequate communication with congregational groups.

Meet with synagogue leadership to gain insight and understanding of Temple Beth Ahm’s culture to facilitate alignment of USY Chaverim, USY Gesher and USY Chapter goals and programs.

Plan mixer activities between USY Chaverim and USY Gesher, and between USY Gesher and USY.

Coordinate USY elections.
