Overview:

Responsible for conducting public relations initiatives on behalf of UJA-Federation. This candidate should have strong writing skills, the necessary background in media relations, and experience in dealing with all kinds of press — print, electronic, and new media. Duties include frequent staff interaction, strategic positioning and management of organizational communications initiatives, developing public relations strategies, writing and distributing press releases, pitching stories to the media, and managing press at UJA-Federation events.

The Public Relations & Events Specialist reports to the Director of Public Relations.

Primary Responsibilities:

Assists the Director of Public Relations with a variety of internal and external communications.

Works collaboratively with the media, including writing and pitching the press, and covering events to accommodate press in attendance.

Assists at events and commission conferences and accommodates press in attendance.

Develops strategic communications materials to enhance organizations initiatives.

Conducts research and interviews appropriate staff for writing assignments.

Serves as a liaison between the communications and marketing teams and other staff.

Project manages and oversees the writing, copy editing, and production of newsletters, brochures, and major publications.

Writes and develops numerous communications pieces, including but not limited to features, brochures, ads, and letters — all under tight deadlines.

Specific Tasks Include:

Writes obituaries and other communications materials as assigned.

Writes, distributes, and follows up on press releases. Edits and/or proofreads own written work and that of others. Makes contacts, appointments, etc., with staff throughout the organization. Creates and maintains media lists, status reports, press release files, and clipping reports. Establishes relationships with press contacts to help obtain media coverage.

 

Competencies/Qualifications:

o College degree.

o 2 – 4 years’ experience writing and editing a wide range of printed materials.

o Ability to write clear, persuasive, informative copy targeted to a variety of audiences.

o Media relations experience, including ability to convey specific and various messages.

o Proven experience in conducting interviews, doing research, etc., for writing projects.

o Demonstrated ability to meet strict writing deadlines with excellent quality work.

o Excellent computer literacy and familiarity with media contact databases, Microsoft Office, and Adobe Creative Suite, or ability to learn computer programs easily and quickly.

o Excellent multitasking skills, including the ability to publicize many events at the same time and simultaneously work on different type of projects.

o Excellent organization skills.
