Hillel Day School of Metropolitan Detroit seeks an experienced Makerspace/STEAM Coordinator to start Monday, August 1, 2021.

JOB SUMMARY: The STEAM Coordinator and Maker Space/STEAM Teacher is responsible for working with classroom teachers to design  K-8 integrated STEAM and Maker curriculum and classes. This includes a Maker Workshop exploratory classes for middle school students as well as Project-Based Learning experiences created and taught in collaboration with General Studies and Jewish/Hebrew Studies teachers in lower school and middle school. Maker educator may also provide lower school science enrichment opportunities, and may provide middle school small group math instruction.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Design and Teach STEAM and Maker Curriculum
  • Facilitate maker projects and making opportunities for all students K-8
  • Teach a middle school makerspace exploratory
  • Create and teach stand-alone maker curriculum
  • Create and teach integrated maker and STEAM curriculum
  • Map curriculum and projects to develop school-wide scope and sequence
  • Integrate science, engineering, design thinking, art and generalized STEAM concepts into lower school curriculum
  • Teach tool safety for a range of tools from hand tools to laser cutters
  • Manage K-8 Makerspace
  • Maintain guiding principles and best practices for the space and teacher collaborations
  • Prototype and iterate arrangements of the space, materials and tools to meet student needs
  • Efficiently manage scheduling, budget, materials, and tools
  • Manage the culture of the makerspace as a hub of collaboration, creativity, belonging, and student choice and voice
  • Professional Development & Community Engagement
  • Provide opportunities for teachers to learn new tools
  • Facilitate collaboration between various subject area teachers
  • Provide instructional support and tool/space access for special projects
  • Engage students, teachers, and parents in maker culture
  • Model 21st century teaching skills
  • Pursue professional development opportunities around curriculum integration, instruction, and maker tools and culture
  • Model curiosity, collaboration, and growth mindset

Candidates may bring any combination of experience and training that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position. This would typically include:
  • Bachelor’s degree in education or a related field
  • Candidate with science background able to teach a section of middle school science preferred but not required
  • Candidate with math background able to teach math enrichment in lower school and small group middle school math preferred.
  • Three years’ professional teaching experience is preferred
  • Knowledge of instructional methods and resources applicable to the assigned area of instruction
  • Effective written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other staff, parents/guardians, and students
  • Ability to follow school policies and procedures
  • Ability to maintain appropriate work habits including regular and punctual attendance and appropriate use of conference and planning time
  • Ability to attend to students for extended periods of time in a variety of settings
