B’nai Jeshurun (BJ) is a vibrant, inclusive, participatory synagogue community on the Upper West Side of Manhattan with nearly 4,000 members.

Responsibilities as Life Cycles Coordinator

The Life Cycles Coordinator will work closely with the Rabbinic and Membership Departments and should have the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Candidate should be a self-starter with familiarity of the Jewish community regarding Bikkur Holim, Hevra Kadisha, brit milah, wedding ceremonies, aufruf, and other areas of the Jewish life cycle. Candidate should have the ability to envision, generate, construct and implement programs and communal structures to foster compassion in the community. Attention to administrative details is extremely important.

Staff liaison for care for the mourners in our community (Hevra Kadisha) First person to receive phone calls notifying BJ of a death in the community Work with the mourners to determine what they need for funeral and shiva period Organize rabbi and/or lay leaders to officiate at funerals and lead shiva minyanim Work with Hevra Kadisha team Provide administrative support for deaths Organize annual appreciation dinner and teaching Work with committee to recruit and maintain new committee members Staff liaison for committee to care for those who are ill in our community (Bikkur Holim) Make sure that rabbis are aware of ill members in the community Maintain Mi Sheberakh (healing) list and cards Work with Bikkur Holim committee to ensure that ill members’ needs are being met Organize annual Bikkur Holim training and annual aliyah/teaching Weddings Field questions regarding weddings at BJ Arrange rabbi to officiate at members’ weddings Schedule aufrufs Births/Baby Namings Take calls from new parents announcing the birth of their child/grandchild Make sure announcement of new babies is publicized and have rabbi call new parents Work with parents/grandparents to arrange for naming of child Send Shabbat dinner and onesie to new parents Fostering Compassion in the Community

Create programs to help address visible and invisible/undefined life cycle moments Establish structures and programs to help create community for affinity groups Build volunteer networks to help members support members Experience and Skills:

Bachelor’s degree required

MSW a plus

Minimum 3 years’ experience

Self-starter

Proven experience motivating volunteers and staff to successfully meet and exceed membership, education and programming goals Demonstrated experience in grassroots member/supporter outreach and programming Sound judgment and keen problem-solving skills Organized, accurate, attention to detail, and demonstrated ability to multi-task Demonstrated success in a complex environment Excellent interpersonal, team-building and communication skills Strong writing and editing skills Use of Google Apps and Office Suite (Excel, Word) required Knowledge of Raiser’s Edge and
