Part-Time Hebrew School Teacher

Job Description

POSITIONS: Hebrew School Teachers

The Astoria Center of Israel is seeking Hebrew School teachers for multiple classes in our after-school Jewish education program, serving students from grades K-7. 

Schedule

  • Tuesdays from 3:30-5:30 pm, following DOE calendar for school closures
  • September 2022 – May 2023

Compensation

  • $55/hour and up, commensurate with experience and education. 

Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of Hebrew language including vocabulary, reading, and writing. Fluency is a plus but not required.
  • Knowledge of Jewish culture, customs, traditions, history, and Torah.
  • Experience teaching in a Hebrew School, Jewish camp, or youth group is preferred. 
  • Eager to work in a collaborative and supportive environment.
  • Possesses great interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Experience incorporating arts, crafts, music and/or movement in lessons.

About ACI’s Hebrew School

ACI’s overarching mission is to provide a warm, supportive, and lively Jewish atmosphere in order for children to gain an awareness of Jewish life and to foster and strengthen their Jewish identity. Our goal is to instill in our students a sense of pride in their Jewish heritage and history using a progressive, pluralistic approach to Jewish literacy, and to teach the importance of Jewish ethical behaviors and values (such as social justice, charity, and tikkun olam), while building a sense of community and belonging among our students.

At every level, teachers will be expected to develop age-appropriate curriculum in partnership with the Education Director in keeping with our mission and values.

There are multiple positions open for our Tuesday afternoon Hebrew School.

Kitah Aleph teacher (ages 5 – 6, geared towards students with little-to-no Hebrew language exposure). Curriculum at this level includes: Hebrew alphabet, elementary level Hebrew reading and writing, reciting blessings on various foods and learning their meaning. 

Kitah Bet teacher (ages 7 – 9, geared towards students with 1 to 2 years of Hebrew language exposure). Curriculum at this level includes: Hebrew alphabet, more advanced Hebrew literacy, introduction of short stories in Hebrew, and more advanced blessings.

Kitah Gimmel teacher (ages 10 – 12, geared towards students with 3 to 5 years of Hebrew language exposure). Curriculum at this level includes: reading Hebrew sentences with vowels, more advanced conversational and written Hebrew, and topics of Jewish life and history.

COVID protocol

  • All eligible staff at our school must be vaccinated and if eligible have received their booster.
  • We follow DOE guidelines for masking and social distancing.
