Executive Director Position
Background: Congregation Adat Reyim, a “Community of Friends” in Hebrew, is an inclusive independent synagogue in Northern Virginia, a short drive from Washington, DC.  We are a thriving and growing intergenerational community of 250 households with a vibrant Preschool and Religious School, a strong culture of volunteer leadership and an engaging new Rabbi who began in July 2020. Currently working with an interim Executive Director, we seek to welcome an experienced, warm, and hands-on Executive Director into our community, to build our future together.

Reports to: President of the Board of Directors

Supervises: Half-time bookkeeper, 2 full-time office assistants, and a full-time custodian.

Schedule: The Executive Director role begins in December 2021 and will be in-person and onsite at Congregation Adat Reyim in Springfield, VA. Work schedule will include some nights and weekends.

Status: Full-time, salaried position

Scope of the Position: The Executive Director will work closely with the Rabbi, Preschool Director, Religious Education Director, administrative staff, and volunteer leadership to realize Adat Reyim’s long-range vision and help ensure our future growth and success. The Executive Director will collaborate with the Board and staff to facilitate religious services, holidays, and other programming, provide administrative support and oversight, and maintain congregational fiscal discipline. Our congregation follows local, state and federal safety and health guidelines, including those for Covid-19.

General Function:

Under the direction of the President of the Board of Directors, the Executive Director shall work to execute Congregation Adat Reyim’s strategic vision by:

  • Managing daily operations, leading staff meetings, managing work schedules, and coordinating use of the building;
  • Supervising two full-time office assistants, a part-time bookkeeper, a full-time custodian, external contractors and vendors, and volunteers; orienting and training new staff;
  • Overseeing the synagogue building and grounds operations;
  • Implementing and executing safety and security protocols and serving as a liaison to local, regional, and national security officials;
  • Providing and overseeing support for the Rabbi;
  • Planning and supporting fundraising initiatives, including annual appeals and special events;
  • Maintaining connections with other synagogues and Jewish organizations, staying current on best practices and national trends;
  • Ensuring successful execution of in-person and online services and other programming, including lifecycle events;
  • Engaging current and potential members, including on-boarding new members;
  • Directing and ensuring the success of our marketing and communications, including the weekly electronic newsletter, website updates, and timely email and print correspondence with members;
  • Preparing and monitoring our annual budget and overseeing day-to-day financial operations, including managing accounts receivable and billing;
  • Facilitating the work of the Board of Directors, its committees and programs/services administered;
  • Reviewing and refining synagogue procedures and documentation as needed.
