Part-Time Director of Jewish Family Life and Education

Job Description


Congregation Beth Shalom’s  Director of Jewish Family Life and Education. Staff member’s responsibilities will include the following:


          25 hour per week leadership of the religious school and the lifelong education of our synagogue members over 10 months (August-May.


          Oversight of the religious school and its curriculum development, recruitment and supervision of teachers, and student/parent/teacher relationships


          Implementation of family and youth programming, development and communication of adult education programs


          Work with Rabbi, Administrator, VP of education to advance our Reform educational program for the congregation and to bring in new families to the synagogue.



Specifics include:


1. Must work with Rabbi, administrator, and clerk to advance our educational program for the congregation


2. Commitment to our temple and Reform movement (extra time as needed; willingness to be present at temple vents, especially Friday night services


3. Knowledge and experience with Reform Jewish education for k-10th grade.


4. Experience in pre-k-elder Jewish programming



Specific roles and responsibilities:


  1. Develop and oversee programs for multi-generational education at temple
    1. Craft a Reform Jewish program for children in religious school grades k-10 (confirmation)
    2. Attend all religious school days: Wednesdays (30), Sundays (22)
    3. Examine and order educational materials
    4. Meet with parents, Rabbis, and congregation as needed or called (weekly?)
    5. Write in newsletter each month
    6. Coordinate volunteers for religious school (PTA) and general education
    7. Maintain database for students
    8. Organize programs for seniors and tots (e.g. trips to SF museum, tot activities, one per month)
    9. Facilitate Family programs (3 per year) on Sundays
    10. Arrange Children’s High Holiday Services
    11. Adult Education planning—brochures created, teachers found, space identified, materials purchased
    12. Attending to Youth Group




  1. Maintaining the budget for educational programs




  1. Hiring qualified teachers to our educational programs, maintaining their professional learning, and evaluating and providing feedback for teachers.
    1. Provide professional development or identify ways for teachers to develop professionally
    2. Evaluate and guide teachers’ practice and assess learning that is taking place
    3. Plan and hold teacher meetings for 30 minutes each week of religious school
    4. Visit classrooms
    5. Account for teachers and substitutes
    6. Study the programs and staff in place and evaluate their effectiveness
    7. Implement and oversee Madrachim and post-confirmation youth




  1. B’Nai Mitvah oversight
    1. Plan and organize tutoring of students
    2. Preparing materials for Bar/Bat mitzvah student and tutor




  1. Attend professional education meetings and Jewish learning events at synagogue
    1. liason at SAJE meetings
    2. attend family services on Friday nights when religious school children present
    3. Attend and help to plan Friday night services with teachers (6)
    4. Coordinate community and temple calendar
