Full-Time Chief Financial and Operations Officer

Job Description

The CFOO  is responsible for all financial and administrative operations of the school. The successful candidate must be detail-oriented, have a strong financial background, ask good questions, be skilled in analytic and quantitative analyses and be committed to a customer-service approach to school operations. Because we are a small high school, we are looking for an individual who is equally comfortable with big-picture strategic thinking as they are with tactical operations and hands-on implementation. He/she must be a team player and willing to jump in and help out as needed.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Supervision

  • Supervise the following departments: Finance, Human Resources, Information Technology, Business Office, Financial Aid, Transportation, Facilities, Food Services, Rentals and Extended Year Programs (camps, etc.)

Key Operational Responsibilities

  • Manage all financial operations including: budgeting, financial aid, expense control, asset allocation, endowment and treasury accounts, financial reporting, accounting controls, cash management and banking relations, capital budgets, operational procedures, and risk management.

  • Manage all HR functions including employee policies and employee trainings. Work with other senior leaders to improve performance review process for faculty and staff.

  • Manage IT Department including IT infrastructure and cybersecurity. Work collaboratively with other departments who rely on IT back-end (Blackbaud) for instructional and communication purposes; Research new approaches to educational technology and IT for schools;

  • Manage the food services department to ensure excellent customer satisfaction and a balanced budget;

  • Manage all short and long-term facilities projects;

  • Research best practice in school business operations to monitor careful investment and cost management relative to strategy and priorities; and

  • Seek continuous improvement in all departments.

Key Leadership Responsibilities

  • Prepare presentations and actively participate in Board of Trustees meetings and Finance Committee, and other Board committee meetings as directed;

  • Prepare for and actively participate in Senior Leadership Team Meetings;

  • Participate in financial conversations with prospective and current families as needed; and

  • Work with the Board to plan short and long-term facility projects and establishing appropriate capital reserve recommendations.

DESIRED COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS

  • At least 5-7 years of comparable and relevant experience (ideally, in an educational or other not for profit setting);

  • BS/BA in Business Management and advanced degree (MBA) preferred

  • Fluency in all aspects of financial management, experience in K-12 school finance is a plus;

  • Ability to quickly study an operational system (food services, IT, etc.), research best practice, conduct analyses, and make strategic recommendations for improvement;

  • Ability to effectively lead others in managing relationships and interpersonal dynamics, navigate conflict well, and foster a positive work environment;

  • Ability to generate creative ideas around revenue-generation (rentals, mixed-use agreements) and implement carefully and with excellence;

  • Ability to maintain a sense of humor and positive outlook;

  • Excellent communication, listening, interpersonal skills, including the willingness and ability to engage in difficult conversations with students, parents, faculty, and staff.
