About the Program

Our synagogue-school program is called Makom, in modern Hebrew meaning “place” and with spiritual connotations of a holy dwelling place.

Our main weekly program is Saturday 10:00am -12:00pm at 15 W 86th Street in New York NY, with the occasional supplemental Professional Development meeting afterwards, 12:00pm-2:00pm

For the sake of pikuach nefesh/saving lives, all applicants for the Saturday positions for the 5782/2021-2022 school year must be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 and willing to work in person while wearing masks with children.

And, informed by our Covid Safety Task Force, we flip to online Zoom based learning on a week by week basis.

About this position:

Assistant 5th Grade Teacher

Responsibilities:

  • Support the implementation of a ~90 minute lesson plan made by your Lead Teacher.
  • Be a supportive informally engaging presence during the ~30 minute (at this time, multiaccess) tefilah/prayer and/or shira/music programs.
  • Work alongside Teen Teaching Assistant(s) who also offer(s) classroom relational, administrative, and creative support.
  • Check in with the lead educator after class by email to share notes about how the day went.

Candidates for this position should be

  • Experienced in working with children joyfully, patiently, and with curiosity about their interests and experiences.
  • Experienced in, or curious about, “Reconstructionist” approach to Jewish tradition.
  • Located in NYC and able to arrive by ~9:45am
  • Have a device and strong enough internet connection for Zoom meetings, if/when we temporarily go remote.

Salary 

$80-$100 per session (depending on experience) which includes two hours of teaching, and ~30 minutes of preparation.

(optional and encouraged) Monthly professional development sessions are 12:00-2:00pm after class, include lunch (if possible) and $35 stipend per session.

There are additional opportunities for compensated work at community programs.
