Part-Time Assistant Rabbi for Education
Congregation Sons of Israel is a Conservative synagogue located in Northern Westchester, perhaps the most beautiful region in the New York metro area. We are about 25 miles north of Manhattan, located near Metro-North rail lines. Our children who attend Jewish day school go to the Leffell School (formerly Schechter Westchester) and are within busing distance from our community. Our children also attend the Ramah Nyack Day Camp, Camp Sprout (Young Judaea) Day Camp, Ramah Berkshires and several other Jewish overnight camps in the area. In short, we are located in an ideal place for a rabbi who wants to be in a thriving Jewish community near a major metropolitan city and yet live in a beautiful area that provides access to open spaces and nature
We are a 350 member congregation that is multi-generational and incredibly active for people of all ages. Although our name points to our roots in the 19th century, we are completely egalitarian and welcome families of diverse backgrounds. We have a 60 child nursery school, a Hebrew School with about 100 students, Hebrew High school, USY, and adult programing that includes classes and speakers from among the leading Jewish scholars and thinkers in the world. We have a strong Shabbat community who enjoy and participate in our services.
A unique feature of CSI is that we have turned two acres of our property into an organic farm. We also raise chickens and collect their eggs. People of all ages work on the farm and help plant, grow and harvest our crops, with a portion of the crops donated to the community. This is a project still in development (it is now four years old), but we see our lives intrinsically tied into both our interest in Jewish values and texts, and our care for the land.
The Assistant Rabbi for Education will first and foremost be in charge of our Hebrew School and Hebrew High School. The Hebrew School meets twice a week, on Tuesday afternoon and Sunday morning. Hebrew High School meets on Sundays only. There are also student minyanim that occur on some Shabbatot and the High Holidays.
The Rabbi in this position will also work with the Nursery School Director. While he/she need not be present for nursery school on a daily basis, there is an expectation to be a presence in the school, attending special programs of the school and interacting with parents on both weekdays and Shabbat. The Assistant Rabbi will work collaboratively with the Nursery School Director, Senior Rabbi, Cantor and office staff.
We would also want the Assistant Rabbi for Education to fill in for the Senior Rabbi when he is away or unable to be there due to circumstances (for example two Shiva minyanim in one night). In general, though we want to emphasize that we are also open for this person to be involved in areas of interest to the Assistant Rabbi. Teaching adults, working with seniors and working with the Senior Rabbi to develop and gain experience in rabbinic work are all possible, though not required.
We are looking for a candidate with Rabbinic Ordination from a recognized rabbinical seminary. In addition, the candidate needs to have a Masters in Education or graduate-level classes in Education. Along with the academic background, we are looking for someone with a love of Judaism and a love of teaching it to children. We want someone who is particularly interested in and excited by the unique opportunity to teach Judaism at a synagogue with an organic farm.
We see this position as being a ¾ time position, which we believe is also one of its benefits, allowing for flexible lifestyle alternatives.
The salary package is $75,000-$90,000 including benefits based upon experience.
